The IR has Two Faces: Positioning Institutional Repositories for Success

This article will describe ongoing efforts at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries to evolve the role of the institutional repository (IR) and to effectively position it within the context of the Libraries’ collections, research support, and scholarly communication services. A major component of this process is re-examining the fundamental aims of the IR and aligning it to the Libraries and the campus strategic goals. The authors situate UNLV Libraries’ experience within the context of the current literature to provide background and reasoning for our decision to pursue two, at times conflicting, aims for the IR: one for scholarly communication and another for research administration

Library Subscriptions and Open Access: Highlights from the University of California Negotiations with Elsevier

On February 28, 2019, the University of California (UC) System announced the cancellation of their $50 million journal subscription deal with Elsevier. The impetus behind the UC decision comes from two issues. Firstly, the increasing costs of journal subscriptions in a landscape where library budgets remain flat. Secondly, the effort to shift the journal publishing model away from subscriptions to a sustainable open access model. The following paper will provide background on issues with the scholarly communication process, academic library budgets and open access initiatives. Additional information will focus on the impact of journal subscription deals with large commercial publishers (including Elsevier) and highlight UNLV efforts to support open access

The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize

This paper will report on the results of a study of library reorganizations in the literature. The authors identified five steps common to all library reorganizations, and this paper describes those steps as well as two management change theories most mentioned in the literature--the eight-step process of change by John Kotter and Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal. The paper will draw conclusions formed by a comparison of these theoretical models to the practice and real life experience of reorganizations as described by libraries in the literature

Accidental Collection Assessment: The NCSU Libraries Collection Move

In January 2013, the NCSU Libraries will open a brand new library, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library. Approximately 1.4 million volumes will be transferred to the new library from existing campus locations for opening day, with the majority of those collections being housed in an automated retrieval system (bookBot) and not in open stacks. A collections move of this size requires strategic planning reinforced and guided by a lot of data, assessment, and clean-up of records, items, and processes. This system-wide effort has given us unique and unprecedented opportunities to assess our collections, their scope, access, composition, and trends in growth and use

TRLN Oxford University Press Consortial E-Books Pilot

This pilot attempts to create a financially sustainable model for consortial acquisition e-books coupled with needed print copies, while moving the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) and partner publishers to a decidedly electronic environment for books that will enhance support for instruction and research across the disciplinary spectrum. Working with their shared book vendor (YBP Library Services), TRLN libraries and Oxford University Press (OUP) hope to evolve a vending model for e-books that other consortia and their partner publishers would find useful

Confidentiality and Informed Consent: Issues for Consideration in the Preservation of and Provision of Access to Qualitative Data Archives

This paper highlights the main issues concerned with preserving fieldwork "contracts", such as informed consent agreements, as they relate to the conduct of research and the archiving of qualitative data. We pay particular attention to the techniques and efficacy of anonymisation and, outline methods of gate-keeping for access to data. Our discussions are based on seven years experience of Qualidata, the ESRC Qualitative Data Archival Resource Centre in dealing with a wide range of qualitative data, including interviews with public figures, and the raw material arising from some of the most classic empirical studies in the UK

Ebook Collection Development in Academic Libraries: Examining Preference, Management, and Purchasing Patterns.

The practice of acquiring ebooks and managing them within the collection is complex. Through survey results and a review of the literature, this report attempts to measure the significance of the ebook format within the collection, the procedures and preferences academic libraries have for acquiring ebooks, and the perceptions librarians have of the acquisition and management workflows. This survey and white paper aim to provide empirical context around the factors that are having the most influence on the way academic libraries acquire and integrate ebooks into their collections.Overdriv

Inclusion and Equity Committee Recommendations for Diverse Recruitment Report

The UNLV University Libraries Inclusion and Equity Committee (IEC) developed the Diverse Recruitment project in order to fulfill its charge in supporting the Libraries’ commitment to increasing representation and retention of historically underrepresented groups at all levels of staff. These recommendations draw upon a range of best practices, procedures, and programs. Largely informed by Duke University’s February 2018 Task Force for Diversity in Recruitment Report, three task forces each investigated a different aspect of understanding diverse recruitment as it related to the Libraries. These results were synthesized into a series of recommendations for the Libraries’ Leadership Team (LLT) and the Libraries to consider implementing
